This guide explains the purpose of laboratory testing, and highlights factors that may affect the validity and usefulness of the results obtained. The results of laboratory tests on soil and rock samples have the potential to affect significantly the design, construction costs and even the success of construction projects. Selection of appropriate sampling methods and test types, and a competent ground investigation contractor and testing laboratory are therefore essential to ensure validity of the test results. These notes are not intended to be fully exhaustive or to be a substitute for national standards or other industry guidance.
