UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) produced a guidance document for selection of water pipes in contaminated land in 2011 which superseded the redundant and outdated 2002 WRAS guidance. This document in turn came under criticism from contaminated land assessors and developers and it was apparent that it needed to be revised to provide a workable framework. United Utilities Water (UUW) produced their own parallel guide in 2012 taking some of the content of the UKWIR document and removing most of the unworkable parts. This document was subsequently adopted by Water UK and the Home Builders Federation (HBF) in 2014. The AGSs Contaminated Land Working Group (CLWG) has reviewed the current practice in relation to pipeline classification and has produced this position paper to assist AGS members and contaminated land assessors in general in following the guidance.
