Bitesize Guide – EC7 Next Generation 09 – Stiffness, Compressibility and Consolidation

The current BS EN 1997-2:2007 provides a synopsis of ground investigation techniques, with guidance on stiffness, compressibility and consolidation parameters embedded within sub-clauses for each technique.

The updated FprEN 1997-2:2023 switches the focus onto soil and rock properties and how they can be measured or determined, providing a methodical and simplified approach to allow the user to consider all the options. Stiffness, compressibility and consolidation parameters are covered in a new dedicated section, Clause 9 and also in Annex F. Currently there is a new draft UK National Annex for FprEN 1997-2:2023 which covers Clause 9. However, there are no NDPs specified in Clause 9. The proposed UK NA does confirm that Annex F can be used.

This Bitesize Guide covers Clause 9 and provides comments on the new structure, requirements, and general observations about Clause 9.
With the new structure of FprEN 1997-2:2023, there are no comments on how the parameters can be used within a design situation, such as calculation of settlement for a spread foundation. FprEN 1997-3:2023 provides information for various geotechnical structures, for example how to undertake calculation of settlement for a spread foundation.
