Roads are a very hazardous working environment and require a commensurate level of training and awareness of health and safety. Motorways are particularly dangerous for those working on foot because of the high speed of the traffic and the absence of any provision for pedestrians, who in normal circumstances are not allowed on the motorway at all. Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineers often need to work on roads for walkover surveys, ground investigation or earthworks repair work and may routinely be exposed to these hazardous environments. Many pedestrians are killed on motorways. The hard shoulder is a very hazardous environment and collisions involving stationary vehicles on the hard shoulder are common.
